Whereas some other artists' 5.1 discs really place instruments in each corner of the room, this is more of a full on sound all round. So when I played this, I was a little anxious, however very pleasantly surprised with regard to this surround mix. The reviews have been mixed and it's true that not all of Rush's surround sound discs have been stand outs in terms of mixing. I've seen this on Amazon for a little while, regarding this Blu-ray edition with surround sound. a hybrid if you will as they were sorting out where they wanted to go and this produces some good tracks on both "Pressure Waves" and "Signals", noticably "The Weapon" which weighs in at over 6 minutes, Alex guitar work being so beautiful along with Geddy's flowing bass lines and Neil's rock steady drumming.Įventually they would progress on to "Power Windows" and "Hold Your Fire" but do not dismiss the early 80's stuff, it holds some magnificent music in the style only Rush can deliver. The start of the 80's were a sort of transition for Rush, leaving the lengthy prog type songs and moving to shorter more commercial songs, but in the early 80's there was a sort of mixture of the two. I think I was spoilt by the first Rush albums I bought, firstly - "A Farewell to Kings", second - "Fly By Night", third "Hold Your Fire", three of the best albums Rush have ever made and when I bought "Moving Pictures" I was slightly disappointed and it took me years to get into it (I was even tempted to give it away at one point in my life!)and it sort of left me not wanting to get into their 80's stuff.Įventually I took the plunge and have to say, there are some good albums here including "Pressure Waves" and this one, "Signals". I can't review a Rush album now without mentioning the sad passing of the legendary Neil Peart, universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest drummers of all time. Not on par with Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves from the same era, but worth getting if you can live with the mildly disorientating production.

It's so different from that magnificent FULL sound that you can't believe three people are making, but after a while your ears adjust to it, and you've got perennial gig faves such as the aforementioned Subdivisions plus the Men both Digital and New and the oddly touching Losing It which always puts me in mind of Genesis's Duchess. compartmentalised I guess - you can almost hear the perspex screens between the musicians and on Subdivisions Geddy sounds like he's singing in a small cardboard box. Thing is, it's a good remaster, and hence the slight weirdness of the original production is faithfully reproduced. I know many people have a problem with this album because of the increased reliance on electronics and keyboards, but I can live with that, also that the song formats are too 'poppy' (there are no sprawling epics à la Xanadu or Fountain of Lamneth) and yeah, I much prefer Hemispheres/ 2112 era Rush (who doesn't?) but the Signals tour was the first time I'd seen them live, so I've got a special affection for it.
